    Default Vacation in California

    Hello again:

My wife and I are going to be traveling From L.A to San Diego and around from 16 to 28 November.
I would like to get some information about places to have lunch in nice airports around (the famous 100$ hamburgers), a nice place to have Dinner in thanks Giving Day ( We did it in the Death Valley three years ago and have a great time) and any information you may think is nice. Also would love to get to know any of you for a cofee and chat about our planes and aviation.
    Thank you in advance.

    Angel

Catalina Island is great for lunch at the airport.

In San Diego, visit the Gas Lamp District for dinner and entertainment for at least one evening. Old town in San Diego is another good stop for an evening.

Enjoy your trip, there is so much to do and see in Southern CA.

One of the best places to have authentic Mexican food, well prepared and clean establishment, is at Nat's Cafe next to Millionaire at Hawthorne Airport (KHHR). A great view of the runway. Just be careful about the Class B airspace that goes right to the surface to the north of the airport.

A great place to watch planes and maybe a few celebs is at Santa Monica Airport, while enjoying a very nice, and somewhat pricey, restaurant/bar on the ground level.

A popular place to stop between LA and San Diego is Chino Airport, which has one of the best aviation museums in the US: Planes of Fame.

If resorts and hot springs sound good, try French Valley airport. A very nice airport (one of the finest GA airports in southern Cal) within a few miles of Murrieta Hot Springs, with a good selection of hotels.

A trip to Catalina Island is well worth it. Just be sure to have some local guidance on flying there. On approach, you cant see the far end, and it can fool an unsuspecting pilot into attempting to land at the end of the runway. Just aim for the middle instead, even though you cant see the far end. Once you get there, check out the local buffalo burgers.

If flying over the ocean seems a bit too risky, you can fly to Cable (KCCB) and try out the buffalo burger bar/restaurant Buffalo Inn about 1 mile away, easy walking distance.

There are many unusual places to visit too. One of the more intersting ones is a nudist colony not far from San Juan Capistrano, with a private airstrip.

Airports I would avoid: LAX(crowded and expensive landing fee, but fun to fly over in the VFR Special Flight Rules corridor), SNA(nothing there but jets landing all day), LGB(very busy and no good restaurants), FUL(short runway with extremely tall obstacles).

San Juan Capistrano, hmmm, is that a private airstrip or private human strip
