    Default MOGAS AVAILABILITY

I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate thread for this issue, but I'm planning a flight from North Central WI to Wheeling, WV and need to find some Mogas in North to Central IN or OH. Maybe someone here can tell me where (on an airport) I can find it. Internet research has failed to find it. This is a problem, generally, with the lack of infrastructure for LSA's in this country. I've inquired and researched extensively, and can only cite you to 2 airports in WI that have 91 Oct. of better Mogas without ethanol. They are Manitowoc (MTW) and Hartford (near Milwaukee, but I don't have the identifier handy). There are a few others that have Mogas, but it is 87 Oct. and not suitable for the Rotax 912 ULS. Maybe others on this forum can report Mogas sources in their areas. I hope they will. In the meantime, can anybody help me with refueling in IN or OH? Thanks.

Presumably you have already checked this site. It is a good source for what you are seeking. In any event, other CT ownersmay not know about it.

    AIRNAV.COM
select: AVIATION FUEL, then PLAN A FLIGHT WITH FUEL STOPS, and/or CHECK LOCAL FUEL PRICES.

Of course, this is good only for the USA. DonBo

    Default 91 Octane Mogas

Yes, that is a good website, and I HAD checked it, without success. I called a couple of places that it reported to have mogas, and learned that it was 87 octane. We've got CT forum members all over the country, and I think it may be the best source of reliable info on this subject to have them post what they know about sources for mogas near them.

    my approach,

for 8 out or 9 oil changes i use synthetic oil and fly round trip before refueling from my mogas fuel station in my hangar.

for long flights where mogas isn't available i change to a blended oil and burn some avgas.

using this approach I have used less than 50 gallons of avgas in 350 hours, that's like 3%.

    Default 100LL and Mogas

    Hi Bob,

You will usually only find 87 mogas at most of the airports listed. If you are going to fly x-country then use a semi-synthetic oil, either Aero Shell 4 stroke oil made for the Rotax in mind or motorcycle Golden Spectro 4. Both are very good semi synthetic oils. If you do not want to use pure 100LL then you can mix 87 and 100LL. The mix is 50/50. This will give you the appropriate octane rating while cutting back on 100LL leading. Do not use more 87 than a 50/50 mix.
Or you can go to Aircraft Spruce and get some TCP or they also have an equivalent that doesn't have quite the harshness in its chemical make up. In the new Aircraft Spruce catalog it is on page 171. There is Alcor TCP or Decalin.
Decalin is my first choice and you can carry it in the airplane without any issues.

If you can find a friendly CT pilot at any airport you fly into that wants to have a few gallons of 91 octane in a few cans then that is the last option.

If you only use the 100LL on a trip and use 91 octane most of the time at home then no big sweat. Go have a good time.

Newbie Bob asked for some specific recommendations. Here is one, although it is quite a bit off his intended route..

Lee's Summit Airport, MISSOURI, USA. (KXLT). This is a very user-friendly airport just a few miles east of Kansas City, KS. Their 100 LL prices are a lot lower than those just across the state border to KS. Also, they carry 91 octane MOGAS. DonBo

Here's another site. I've heard that it's hard to keep this info up to date. Some of the places that carried mogas in the past no longer carry it.
