    In this case the tube failed at what looked like a seam. The tire was good before the blowout but was damaged in the incident.

    I had the same problem about a year ago. Fortunately I was on a wide paved runway but there was no controling it other than missing the runway lights. Luckily no damage. Those original tubes are bad news

    If I ever go far with the plane, I am asking for a spare tire to pack. Its a split rim and really easy to change.

    Check for cracking in the sidewalls, particularly halfway between the rim and the tread. Some cracking is normal, but lots of cracking suggests a problem.
