I'm hoping the different items I've seen made by fellow CT'ers will become available to the rest of us. I thought maybe an area where they could describe, picture and price their wares might be helpful.
Paul in Canada has GREAT seats, Bob has in progress some mini wheel pants, I think Roger L is working on breaks and a gal in Florida claims to have some nice apparel. I've seen camera mounts, foot rests and more so come on everyone, lets see what we can help each other with.
Not sure where else this fits since it is not technically a add on but maybe someone can comment on using folding bikes. I found this one on the web. It was selected mainly because of the size. I always thought a bike is a great idea but they were so big. this one looked interesting.
We do have a member (Mel Mohr from ID) that carries his bike. He takes out the passenger seat and curtain between the cockpit and baggage area. He made a clamp style bracket that goes between the seat rails so he can clamp the rear bike wheel in place. He takes the front wheel off the bike and sets the bike nose into the baggage area and the rear wheel is now where the seat used to be. He puts the front wheel along side the rear wheel and clamps them in place by the bracket he made between the seat rail. He still has room up front for some baggage and some space in the rear. I believe it is a full size bike. Find him under our member list and send him an email or PM.
All we need now is a slightly increased weight to go with the pod and we have what amounts to the best touring aircraft available at the price.
Australian Light Sport Aviators are hoping to get 750 kgs approved under the LSA rules in the not too distant future (April 2010 perhaps?)... then the pod might be worthwhile if we can just get FD to up the maximum weight limit.
Imagine arriving in town, pull out the fold-out bike and go do the tourist thingo!
My wife and kids got me a Dahon Mariner folding bike (http://www.dahon.com/us/marinerd7.htm) for Fathers day last year. If you’re flying alone it comes in handy when where you want to go is too far from the nearest airport to walk, and especially at airports where rental cars aren’t available.
I strap the bike into the passenger side cargo pass-through area so it’s out of my vision and well clear of the stick. I bring the seat along too, just in case I want to take someone up for a local flight.
On its first mission I got a flat tire about 5 miles from the airport. I took it back to the shop and had them replace the pneumatic tubes with solid neoprene. The second time out I broke the chain while standing on the pedals to go up a steep hill about 15 miles out (fortunately I was able to bum a ride back in a pickup). I took it back to the shop again and they replaced the chain with a heavy duty model. Since then I have used it on several 5 to 15 mile trips with great success. The rack doesn’t hold much (I need to work on that) but combined with my backpack I’m completely self-contained.
If I can get one of the new cargo pods and fit two bikes in it, I might find someone to come along with me.
I carry a full size bike in my CT. Attached is a picture. I carry the passenger seat in the cargo hold, so I can take a passenger when I get to my destination. It takes me about 10 minutes to put the bike together after I land. I loosen the handlebars and fold them along the frame, and take the seat and wheels off. I then place the bike upside down on a bracket I made which goes into the tube which supports the seat. The bracket fits into the seat rails. The picture explains the procedure better than words.
