    Default Anyone installed a Perma-Cool Oil Thermostat for Rotax 912 / 914

Anyone tried the Bully Hawk , Perma-Cool Oil Thermostat for Rotax 912 / 914

Im a former R_E_M_O_S G-3 owner who had Complete Control over the oil temps with a knob.
The CTSW has been a disapointment in this area.

Will the above item fix the problem with having to add tape and remove it??

    thanks

    Default Perma Cool

The Perma Cool thermostats only go to 180F and most of the guys I talk to don't seem to like them. My standard CTSW with out a thermostat heats up just as fast. With my tape I can get more than 180F on the oil temp. All bets are off if you guys live in some foreign cold country like Montana or Minnesota. LOL The CT thermostats certainly are in the way when you need to work on something.
There is a guy on another forum that makes a cockpit controlled louvered vent sent up for 912's on other planes. Maybe I can contact him?

    Roger

    Isnt 180 degrees sufficient?

The cockpit control knob is the way to go, see if you can get me some info.

it is nice to exceed the boiling temperature of water resulting in a moisture free crankcase.

    Default Temps

If all you can get is 180F then that's good enough, but you can get there with the tape too. I agree a nice cockpit adjustable vent would be nice.

Yes Mack...I installed the PermaCool thermostat but was not happy with it. I still have to use tape in winter (and our winters are very mild!). Roger L. is right.....an adjustable vent would be the way to go.

    Default oil thermostat

I have the Permacool . Run up time is much shorter .but.. since it opens at 180°F , I still have to tape the rad. I wish the thermostat open at 210°F but they don't make it

the best installation would be the oil cooler and radiator is two separate locations AND louvers on the oil cooler

wish I had a smaller oil cooler ..since I have the ''smaller'' engine

There are a few opinons when installing these oil thermostats. There are typically two different configurations. One configuration requires 100% of the oil to flow thru the oil cooler regardless off the temperature and only a small amount will be bypassed thru the body of the thermostat itself. The other configuration only uses 3 of the ports on the thermostat and allows only a limited amount of oil flow thru the cooler. Roger is rightthats is imparitive that the engine be allowed to reach 215 F at least once everyflight. If your not sure if you've been doing this then check under your oil cap, if you see a white sludge then you know your engine has been running too cold.
