Default New member in Washington, with a pre-buy question

    Greetings group,

Am buying a 2006 CTSW in California next week and was hopping to get some feedback on things to check for in the Pre-buy inspection. I'm an A&P, but have never preformed an inspection on a 912S. I'll do all the things in a normal annual, but any specific things I should look for would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to search out Roger Lee's phone number here on the forum and call or email. He's the man...

Here are some things I would definitely check:

    1. All Engine SB's current (cross reference against Engine # and Gearbox #)
    2. Check the spark plugs for looseness, and condition of wires
    3. Check the exhaust manifold for cracks
    4. Check air filter housing, make sure no leaks
    5. Look for any signs of leaking oil around engine
    6. check engine oil logs. was the filter cut and examined?
    7. how often was the oil changed, and what fuel has been used (100LL or mogas, octane?)
    8. check condition of battery and cables
    9. check condition of engine mount and bolts
    10. how easily does the engine start up
    11. what RPM when engine is idle (below yellow line or above?)
    12. what does the engine sound like?

Some of these things you would check on any plane engine, but the Rotax engines need special attention to fuel and frequency of oil changes, and the special SB's need to be applied. All of these items are fairly easy to check, but the main thing is to note in the logs how well the engine has been cared for. You can also tell from the other items if the engine was properly maintained and operated.
