    Default Student Licence Question

My instructor told me I had to go to a flight DR to get my student licence even though I'm not going for a 3rd class medical. Isn't there an easier and cheaper way to get my student card with out going to an AMA? Any DR visit costs money... BTW, I"m a little concerned my instructor did not know this info because I'm almost 100% positive I don't need to go to an AMA, just not sure how its done...

    Thx,

Call the FDSO and ask, I think you can get one there.

PROCEDURES. A student pilot certificate can be issued by a designated aviation medical examiner as part of a medical certificate. However, an aviation safety inspector (ASI) and designated pilot examiner (DPE) can issue student pilot certificates with no medical.

I'm pretty sure my wife and I got them free at the FDSO. You should call for an appointment and make sure you bring all the documents that they need.

    me either, i meant FSDO

A student pilot certificate is required, however, and can be issued by any designated pilot or sport pilot examiner for about $25. Candidates complete FAA Form 8710-11, which differs from the traditional 8710-1 in that it includes an area to record driver's license information
    ...
Traditionally, flight school managers contact their local FSDO for answers pertaining to training situations. However, the FAA Light Sport Branch, located in Oklahoma City, oversees all aspects of sport pilot training/examining and light sport aircraft. We found the Light Sport Branch to be the best source for answers, as FSDO personnel are not always up to date with the finer points of sport pilot issues.

Yes, student pilot certificates are free at the FSDO. They didn't know how to really do these in 2006, hopefully they're more polished by now.

Is it likely I would have an ASI or DPE close by KFFM? I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks; like someone mentioned $25 for the convenience of not having to drive 70 miles as my closest office is in Fargo ND. Not sure if a DPE is someone who does pilot reviews or is the person who does checkrides or its the same for both. I thought there was a "level" between those 2 but could be wrong.

The guy who does checkrides is who you want. Ours does not like to do a paper application anymore, so we do it on IACRA. Check with your local AME they might do the student only certificate for a smaller fee. With the 5 year medical for those under 40 and the student ticket only good for 2 years the DR will most likely have to have done one before. Tom
