Fuel valve with detents
From one posting here the conclusion is that the engine will quit if one wing tank is run dry. Now I think you have to unport the fuel in the tank with remaining fuel as well.

Ed: When there are two selector valves on an aircraft, the likelyhood of fuel mis-management raises drastically. Yes, you could even out the fuel flow during those long XC flights, but I think that the reasoning behind simultanious fuel flow from both tanks is sound. I believe that Cessna switched to one valve on the 150/152, after many fuel management accidents. I remember Matthias told me last year that early CT’s had Right/Left selector valves- once they changed to one valve for both tanks, takeoff accidents decreased dramatically.
I usually leave the fuel valve open overnight to even out the tanks... make sure that you aren’t on a side hill though.
