    Default Brake Master Cylinder

Whilst cleaning the under belly of the CT I noticed that a small amount of brake fluid kept appearing in the lens cover of my strobe light and traced the source back to the brake master cylinder. See attached photo with ‘artistic’ rendering of the locality. There appears to be a slight weep from the piston seal out of the master cylinder barrel. I have sent an email to the Italian manufacturer………

So far I haven’t received a reply. I was hoping to source a seal kit or information as to the seal type.
    Anyone any ideas?

    Hi Mac,

If you have a leak here it means a rebuild kit. A new Italian master cylinder is about $180 and a rebuild is not far from that ($150). I have sent several emails to the Marc idiots in Italy and have never once received a reply. This is also one of the reasons FD dumped them. They could never get a reply back about anything in a timely manner. They don't speak any English which might be part of the problem. If it were me I would buy a new Matco master cylinder for approximately $120 and be done with it. It is a drop in replacement. You could have it in a couple of days, a rebuild for a Matco master cylinder is $10 if it ever needs it. It puts out almost double the pressure. The Italian brakes put out 60K psi where the Matco is 118K psi and has more volume.

    Thanks for the info.

    Thanks again,

i have a similar looking brake cylinder on my italian-sourced 2008 Savannah ADV. the brake line disconnected completely (cylinder is attached to toe brakes so there is much more movement than on a CT.) my silver-colored right-angle fitting has nipple with small o-ring, no ferrule. i cut a 1/2 inch off brake line with razor, shoved it back on nipple, screwed the nut back on, and it's still holding. again, your cyclinder may not have same fitting but would be worth a try.

    Jacob,
Thanks for the link. I rang Roger and spoke with him regarding the master cylinder and all is now sorted with Matco direct.
By the way Roger sounds just like you, one would almost think you were brothers...... hmmmm

Mine master cylinder failed just as you described with a leak at about 300 hours. We ordered a new one from FD. When the pads wear down enough I plan to go with the Matco upgrade, too. WF
