Hi Roger. I had some really interesting results today attempting to resolve my vibration in my CTSW. All mounts appeared to be OK so I figured that I’d just re-torque the firewall bolts. Upon doing this, I found that all of the six bolts had torques less than 100 in. lbs. and three of the bolts were less than 50 in. lbs. I torqued all to recommended 200 in. lbs. This transformed my airplane. The first time I started up the engine, I could immediately tell that it felt different just during idle. Now that the engine frame and front gear was solidly attached to the firewall, I could feel all of the cracks and tar strips that never seemed noticeable before during my taxi out to take off. Once in the air, the difference was amazing. No vibrations or shakes in any phase of my flight. I’ve flown a lot in my friend’s new CTLS and always wished that my plane felt solid and had less vibration like the CTLS. I just thought that my equipment was older and what I felt was normal. Now, my plane feels tight and vibration free like the CTLS.
You have recommended to everyone that they should make sure their A&P put a wrench to the engine mounts at each inspection. If anyone doubts this, have them give me a call. Thanks for taking a few minutes to discuss this with me today.
Dick
