Default stuck oil filter would not come off

I have concerns that the recent 100 oil change has gone wrong. I think in hindsight I should have pre-loosened the oil filter prior to warming up the engine before changing the oil. On the 100 hour service the oil filter did not want to come loose. What happened next was the oil filter can section rotated on the filter flange section, I could see by the mark I had made this was happening. Eventually we got the wrench right up on the flange; it began to turn and then could be removed as normal.

Now all this took about an hour or more and now I read there is a chance oil may have drained from the tappets. There is a service bulletin SI-912-010 d04399 cautioning to complete the oil change without delay, but as the delay has happened it looks like I have to perform 3.1.3 in SI -912-018.

Beware your filter wrench is up to the job, or you may have a delay you don't want.

    Default oil filter

    Hi John,

If all you did was remove the oil filter and did not turn the prop to pump air into the system or break any other oil line then just put the new filter on pre-filled with oil, make sure the oil reservoir has oil in it to the correct level
(3L for the oil change) and rotate the prop 20 times. Don't rotate the prop unless the oil reservoir and the oil filter have oil in them. You will be good to go.
When I do a change and unscrew the oil filter I have a new one filled with oil ready to go right back on so there is very little oil drool.

I have had this happen so I always have a special oil filter wrench (available at most auto parts stores) handy that allows a firm grip on the silver colored band at the filter base. Just be careful not to get the jaws on the engine itself.

I use a large channel lock plier to take off the filter. It crushes the housing a bit in the process, but so what. And it comes off easily. You probably overtightened the filter when you put it on. I use maximum hand tight and it never has leaked. Probably ten oil changes this way with no problems. WF
