Default Airframe high frequency vibration "buzzing"

    Hi,

My friend has a CTSW, which has suddenly developed a "buzzing" vibration in the cockpit area.

It sound like it is over the left hand side (port) above head level, but it is difficult to locate as I guess the sound may well be transmitted from another area through the fuselage materials.

It almost sounds like a bee stuck in a jamjar! with a slightly deeper tone.

It is not evident at the climbout and then a few minutes into the flight the noise starts and gets progressivley louder.

Pulling back on the stick the noise will stop, nose down and the noise increases.

We have spent ages trying to locate the cause, packed the fuel runs with foam just in case they were vibrating on the upright. Also anything else that may appear to be possible to vibrate.

Anybody else had a similar problem? Looks like the next job is to remove the wing and check.

The tape between wing & cockpit might be the cause.

Yes I had a similar noise and it was caused by the the tape split wasn't easy to see until it was peeled off I would definatly look at that first

Flying CTSW is just great 500 hrs + now 2100 hrs total

Yesterday is history. Tommorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift that's why they call it the present.

Had a similar noise in my CTSW awhile back, as mentioned above it was the wing root tape split on the top side. New tape cured the problem.

What is the name of the tape being used and where can I get it. I too get a high pitch sound occasionally above my head.

    Hi John and Robin,

You can get the Bowlus tape in three different widths from Cumulus Soaring.. http://cumulus-soaring.com/bowlus.htm

I like the 1.5 and 2 inch for the gear fairing leg/wheel pant joints. 1 inch for wings a tail.
