We recently subscribed to the xm weather and radio for our 496 gps - weather works great, but can't get audio on the music. Audio is turned on - any of you techie folks have any ideas what missing or wrong?

Hi Robin,
Do you hear other warnings from the 496 such as the terrain alerts and things like "external power lost"? I assume you checked the volume level on the 496 as well as the audio output not muted in the xm radio menu. There is also a setting I think in the setup menu that selects the audio output for the stereo jack or the output thru the power connector audio pin.
Just a few thoughts.

Yes, we do get terrain alerts loud and clear. The radio audio is "on". I will check your other suggestions too. Thanks.

Did you subscribe for the additional small fee for the xm radio?
Robin,
Do you have a patch cord run from the audio jack on the 496 to the intercom, or are you just using the Power / Data Cable only? I believe other audio such as terrain warnings will output through the data cable, but the XM will only output through the line out jack. Also check your audio settings to see what the output is set as.

Yes, we did subscribe to Radio. I will check the patch cable..that may be the problem...where on the back of the GPS unit would that cable be plugged in...then I can check all plug ins. If it is the patch cable, can I install that or does a "professional" have to do it?

The patch cable I speak of is basically an audio cable with a jack on each end. It looks like the plug you connect ear phones into on an MP3 player or cell phone. The plug on the 496 is on the back of the unit, on the opposite side as the power and antenna cables. One end of the cable plugs into the gps, the other end plugs into the music input most of us have on the panel near the intercom. I just connect mine that way, so that I can unplug the music when I want, without having to mess with the gps settings. If you want a more permanent install, the cable can be cut and connected to a line in on the back of the intercom.

Thanks Roger - great info....we think we are getting this figured out. For the permanent connect would we wire into the back of the input hole or the back of the intercom unit box. Also, for the less permanent solution, if you are pulling the cable through from the back of the GPS unit to the front into the input, does the gps unit still snap in snugly without tweaking the cable?
Thanks again,

Yes, the audio cable will fit properly into the upper left back side (while looking at the unit) and snap properly into the mount. I've got mine running from the GPS into a mp3 input in my panel. This directs the XM info directly through the headsets via the PS Engineering intercom. It's really cool.
