is it possible to re register CT as ELSA? i want to add VGs for short field and do other mod's w/o FD approval. i don't care too much if it reduces resale value

If you can then would FD still provide parts for it. To me being stranded and without parts would put a hautl to it.

Yes, you can take it to E-LSA. Your airplane has to be in annual and taken to a DAR. He/she will take your S-LSA registration and issue you an E-LSA registration. Like vasectomy, reversal should not be considered an option. Carol Carpenter at Rainbow Aviation in Corning California is knowledgeable on the procedure and her husband is a DAR and can do it.

Be aware that your insurance rates may change. There's no reason why FD wouldn't sell you parts.

Oh it can be done, no doubt, however, for the price of a phone call, I highly recommend asking FD what their policy is about selling parts and providing special maintenance support for Experimental Light Sport Aircraft before you leap. Get in in writing so you don't get orphaned at some date.

My thinking is: If you or I were the original MFG and will always be liable unless the the plane is registered as salvaged, then Why would we depart from our SLSA standards of maintenance and subject the company to additional uncontrolable libabilities. No telling how those parts would be installed and maintained. The MM check lists would not be mandatory to follow. Imagine If the flood gates opened for these aircraft to be maintained by owner operators they'd be open to all kinds of questionable maintenance practices and operations. I had a 70ties vintage Gruman Tiger and parts were scarce. Along came a new company that restarted production back in the early 90ties. They would not sell parts with essentially the same specs for our aircraft for reasons of unwanted liabilities. It was a nice performing little plane but being orphaned with many unobtainable parts like nose gear, cowlings, landing gears, control surfaces is not the way to go in my book. Not comfortable knowing there is no source for unique spare parts. Again, ask the MFG in writing and know before you depart the program. Why doesn't FD sell kits?
