    AZIMUT 270 – The Adventure has started!

    Flight Design bids farewell to Francisco and Yannick

    Sion, CH, April 29th 2010;
    A big crowd of supporters, friends and family has given an enthusiastic farewell to the two adventurers Francisco Agullo and Yannick Bovier when they took off on April 30th at Sion Airport, Switzerland to start their journey around the world.
    The two Flight Design CTLS christened “Dreamcatcher” and “Celine” are equipped with auxiliary fuel tank system, life saving equipment, special communication tools, other than that, they represent serial standard.
    Flight Design Germany was flying in with 2 x CTLS to be part of the departure and wish them well.

    The journey can be traced under the following link http://azimut270.ch/en/position.html, we keep our fingers crossed and look forward to meet Francisco and Yannick in a few weeks time on their return.

    I read on Dan Johnson's site, that they have capacity for 120 gallons total on board, but I find it hard to believe. That would be an additional 86 gallons, and total fuel weight would be 720 pounds. If they could get it off the ground, they would have 24 hour endurance, at full cruise rpm. Doesn't seem right to me.

    Hi,

    I've seen the two CTLS in Eggersdorf at Flightdesign Technik. The CTLS has the two standard tanks with 34,4 gallons plus two aux. tanks with 45 gallons and the copilot seat tank (picture above) with 35,6 gallons. Thats 115 gallons at all. Calculate with 5,3 gallons (increased mtow) the endurance is ~22 hours.

    They got also a special permission from the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) to fly the long legs with 1654 lb mtow.

    At the moment they are in Dakar,Africa and the next leg to Natal,Brasil would be very exciting: 1620 nm over the ocean! In my calculation ~16 hours flight time.

    From looking at the pictures, the aux. tanks that Kai mentions are outboard tanks in the wings. It looks like all four wing tanks have a vent stacks like the SW uses. Plus a fuel selector system on the console.
