    Default Garmin 496 question

My Garmin 496 was stolen from my aircraft shortly before delivery and very conveniently the thief cut off all connectors from behind the panel. The dealer purchased a new GPS, with a new data cable and antenna cable - but when installing today we realized that there was a third white cable with three internal wires (brown/white- blue/white and white) which was apparently connected also to the GPS because it seems that a connector had been cut off. We assumed this was the audio cable to be connected at the back of the GPS (left side)- but were not sure and no instructions appear in any literature we could find. We also were not sure which audio connector to use and which wire to connect to each location on the connector. Any advice would be welcome.

    Default Garmin wiring

You didn't say what kind of a jack is on the cable. I have a 396 (same connections). You have the BNC connector for the GPS antenna. Then a weird 5 pin plug which is used to supply power as well as talk to the autopilot and/or EFIS (if you have one). Then you have a 5 pin plug (similar to a USB on a digital camera) which can be used for data transfer and for charging the battery from a 110 v ac plug (here in the US). Lastly you have 3 1/8th inch stereo jack (such as is used on a walkman for the headphones) for the audio from the XM radio. It will also announce terrain warnings and altitude warnings. On the garmin web page you can look at the manual for the 496. I looked up the US version (before I realized you were in Israel) and the cable layout is on page 158.

Here is the link to the 496 US manual. The European manual is on the garmin site as well.

    Hope this helps!

If it is the audio cable (1/8th stereo jack), it can be connected to your audio panel. If the audio panel can handle stereo then you can listen to the XM radio in stereo. I don't know if you have XM radio there or not but it is nice on long x countries.

    Thanks John
I have both the weird power data/power cable and antenna connected. Flew today and the GPS seemed to work fine (though I did not check the auto pilot or HSI display yet to see whether the GPS is displayed). But my problem is that all the jacks were cut off-and now I have found a white wire behind the panel with three internal wires which apparently belongs to the GPS with the jack cut off (I think it belongs to the GPS because the jack was cut off) and I am not sure whether this is the audio cable and if it is what jack should be used and how the wires should be connected. I could not find any documentation about this wire. If someone happens to have his or her GPS out or has taken out the middle panel, I would be glad if they could check and let me know what this wire belongs to. and how to connect it.
    Thanks
    Richard
