Flight Lesson 8/17/10

Today’s flight lesson was lousy.

Before I do my solo, I want my landings to be perfect (not 80%). I am able to land the plane by my self, most of the time, but I’d like to be better at it before I get to the next stage as a pilot.
What I don’t like about my flight instructor is that whenever I do something wrong, I get yelled at.

Yelling at your flight student is not professional. We are both adults and he’s a commercial pilot. If I was ever to put the plane in a dangerous situation, he can always say “I have flight controls” and take over.
Luckily I have never put the plane in serious danger. I get yelled at for little things like not using enough right rudder.

Today was the same situation, he just yelled at me for not doing this or that, when he could have just said it. He said if you don’t do this right, we’re going to full stop taxi back and do ground school. (I don’t like doing ground).
I said, I don’t like being yelled at and I just want to land after this and go.
We landed, didn’t do ground, and I just left.

I also don’t like how my flight instructors give me a hard time about fueling my plane by my self.
I announce on the ground frequency that I’m taxing over to the fuel pumps so people look out and I do a clean and safe job getting the fuel.
Instead, they want me to do it at the beginning of my lesson and they probably charge me for it.
I own the plane. Next time, I’m just going to do it.
I love how flight instructors have a double standard for their students. If I’m 5 minutes late or not prepared enough, this instructor freaks out at me. But if he wants to bump my time to fly with someone else, or do a check ride in a helicopter, that’s ok. I can’t stand it. Last Friday he bumped me back two hours, so I canceled the lesson.

I just called my instructor and said that I don’t like him yelling at me and that it’s not professional.

Hmmm.. made me recall my first instructor when I started in aviation. The bottom line is that you do not appreciate the manner in which you are being treated and taught. This will ultimately affect your flying and may even endanger you in the future by continuously being nervous in the presence of your instructor. The good news is that there are many excellent, capable instructors out there with the requisite people skills or personality which will match your needs as a student. You are a paying customer...vote with your wallet and seek out another instructor pronto! Some peole respond well to critical teaching, others don't. I nearly gave up flying due to my first instructors shouting and constant criticism. Luckily I didn't and a few months later, found a great instructor who gave me confidence and a true appreciation of good airmanship.
Good luck in finding a compatible and capable instructor.

Actually, calling the instructor helped out a lot.
The first instructor I had couldn't commit to flying at least 3 times a week, so I joined this flight school where they could. Now I fly almost every day.
