    Smile Installation ELT

    He!!!!
I am a new members of this Forum.
I am an Italian pilot. In my country there isn't a CT dedicated forum, so I have a lot af questions for my new friends.
I have just buy an Ameri-King AK-450 (in italy the CTSW is an ultalighit airpane so can use this type of ELT).
The self installation is permitted but I don't know where the ELT is usually lokated in this type of airplane.
I have read all manual istruction so I think in the baggage compartment, but I am not sure.
    .
    .
    Sorry for my english.
    Thank's

The ELT installations I've seen were always in the baggage compartment... on top of the Rib that runs down the center of the floor. It's convenient for cable routing and sturdy enough to withstand some Gs. This location also tends to receive less damage in accidents. I've replaced my 121.5 ELT (AK450), with the 406 Mhz (AK451).

    Thank Tim,
    You have confirmed my idea.
I will install the elt remote unit on the cockpit over the flaps display, it' s a good position also for the control cable.
I will position the antenna on the fuselage's top behind the parachute exit.
I inform you about the proceed of my work.

My ELT antenna is on the belly just below the ELT. You might want to consider that location. My reason is that if you crash, there is a good chance you will be upside down. If the antenna is on top, it will be useless. That's just my opinion. No matter where you put it, you'll probably wish you had put it somewhere else if, in fact, you ever actually need it.

I had heard that the TSO requires the antenna to be mounted on the top. I've not read the installation instructions for putting a 406 ELT in yet, so I don't know this for fact. Tom

All I know is that mine came from the factory on the bottom. If it needs to be on the top, then I would carry a separate antenna so you could take the ELT out and generate a good signal regardless of how the plane ends up. That assumes you are able to move around.

Ther is no antenna location requirement for the 121.5 ELT's, just the 406's. A while back I spoke to the mechanic at Flight Design USA about the upgrade and he mentioned the antenna change. Tom

That's interesting. It kind of negates the "just drop in" the new 406 and use all the existing wiring and antenna. Unless I misunderstood, that was the hype being used by the ELT manufacturer to get people to upgrade.

You change to mounting bracket, antenna, and small reset panel on the dash. The small panel on the dash is just remove the old and screw in the new. The wire from the luggage compartment to the dash remains the same. There's a little work, but not much.
