    Default 406 ELT upgrades

So, I'm guessing that most of us with all but the most recent CTs will be upgrading to the new ACK E-04 406 ELT sometime. They are finally going to be released mid-August. http://www.ackavionics.com/

A question for LSA installs - Who does the install? Qualifications needed? Logbook entries needed? Does Flight Design need to approve?

I'm ready to get mine as soon as FD gives approval. Sounds like you change the antenna then plug and play.

I imagine that FD will give individual approvals if they don't do a blanket approval. Installation will be by whomever FD approves but I am guessing it will not be owner install approved even for the direct replacement.

    Default ELT

    Hi Tim,

An A&P, Avionics person or an RLSM-M could do the install. Yes it needs to be in the logbook. Probably listed on the equipment list. I'm guessing like you that FD will give a fleet approval since it effects most CT's. You have a nice Spot, you don't even need an 406. I believe the new ELT needs to be registered, too.
    It's not required equipment.

'required as of July 1st for travel to Mexico.... Canada will require too, but they've pushed the date back.... Mexico may as well, considering the units have been delayed.

News Flash... from Baja Bush Pilot website...

In an email just received from Mexico City, the use of the 121.5 ELT will still be accepted up to October 1, 2009. It was also indicated that this will be the last extension and after that date, all aircraft operating in Mexico must have an atomatic 406 MHz ELT operational in their aircraft.

This extension was made possible by the many flying orginizations, including the BBP and AOPA, who worked with Mexico to make it happen. There have been a lot of changes with the DGAC in the last several months (see alert) and it has been a real challange however, we pulled it off and we are now clear to head South.

However, do not put off getting your 406 installed in your aircraft. October is only three months away and again, Mexico will not postpone this requirement again.
