I'd be looking at the Lowrance 2000c ($649 - $699)or 600c ($449 - $499) units, if I was in the market for a budget GPS. The later Garmin's are great, as they have XM Weather capability, which the Lowrance units don't support. However, the Lowrance units offer great functionality and screen sizes.

Garmin 96C, $300. Runs on AA batteries, works well in other airplanes. I use it as a backup in the CT and the glider.

190 hours in the CT and have loved every one.
I have a GARMIN 496 as my primary GPS. It is quite expensive. I use a Control Vision Corp ANYWHERE TRAVEL COMPANION as a backup. It is excellent, has a larger screen than the 496 and both aviation and land modes. It is presently offered as a Factory Refurbished Hewlett Packard iPAQ with a 90 day warranty. Cost $445.00 - a real bargain. Check it out at www.controlvision.com DonBo

I've got a Lowrance black & white as my backup.
unless you're looking to spend $$$ on one of the lower-end aviation units, I'm thinking just about any of the consumer models will work fine. I've had 5-6 consumer units, and currently use the Garmin 60Cx as a backup. More important to me is that the unit be easy to use.... If it's the same brand as your main unit, it will likely have a similar interface, and may even share maps.
I often check my backup unit, to see how it compares to my 296 for landmarks, roads, and airport information. I've found that the consumer units often have better info on little cities, lankmarks, and roads.
Of course, you've probably seen the news this week, that the GPS system may begin to unravel within the next year? Nice.
