    Default Headset problem!!!

    Hello,

I Bought one pair of new bose (ANR) headsets about two weeks ago, I also am using a filser ATR 600 radio, whilst also using one pair of senns HME 100 (passive).

I'm having problems, that when i apply full power i get a cutting in and out interference noise in the headset, when i reduce the power the headset seems to settle and occasionally i have a little interference. PAIN IN THE BUTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I've tried a few things,

    1. Ive switched the electmic and dynamic switch on the radio to see if this helps, But to no avail!!
    2. Ive turn the mac setting on the radio to its lowest, to no avail!!!
    3. Disconnected the senns headsets, this didn't help either.

Ive also phone both filser and bose, to see if they had this problem reported, bose reckoned that i might need to fit a filter on the antenna cable, ???
Both filser and bose have said to return the equipment and they would check it out.

I was just wondering if any of my fellow CTsw owners had come across this issue and if so how did you resolve it, Hopefully someone out there knows how to sort this out or i'll have to take both them up on there offer to send back the kit, which i don't want to do at this time!!!!

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks neil

I've had a similar problem, but it didn't have anything to do with electronics... full power = full noise, and my vox sensistivity (squelch?) on the intercom would pickup engine noise. Adjusted it down and my interference went away.

My Bose, which was great in my C-182, does exactly what Neil is talking about in the CT. I used to get it only occassionally then I changed out the earpieces with some Oregon Aero oversized earpieces and that made it worse!!

My solution? I went back to my vintage 1995 Telex ANR's and they work well.

This is not an intercom squelch problem like Tim talks about. There is another thread in this forum where Lockwood has tried out several makes and models and recommends, for CT's, the Telex Stratus 50 which I am tempted to try.

I think this is a frequency range problem and the Bose, which works well with many GA aircraft, is overwhelmed by the CT's frequency range. Not that the CT is any louder dB wise, just a different frequency. Plus, the Bose has less clamping power which makes it very comfortable, but causes a problem in some aircraft. For example, when my Bose gave me the problem Neil describes, I could make it go away by grabbing each earpiece and clamping them tighter to my head. Considering that on takeoff, when the problem was most pronounced, you are supposed to have one hand on the stick and the other on the throttle, this soulution didn't seem ideal to me!

ANR systems are good at lower frequencies and not at higher ones. This is why ANR headsets aren't used on turbine aircraft. The headsets are probably not designed to handle the higher frequency. At 5000RPM, the rotax is producing frequencies around 83Hz, although harmonics are going to be higher.

    Doug,

Yes. Exactly what I was trying to say but didn't know enough to get it out. That would also tie in to why the Telex Stratus 50 works better? Because it has a higher passive protection than most?

    Hi guy's

    thanks for the input!!

However this dosent explain why im getting interference when i have power back to idle and sitting on the deck?

    1. is this a problem that can be solved. or
    2. should i sell my headset and try for a set of zulu's or something else???

    thanks neil

    Default Another case

I recently had a passenger for a demo flight (CTLS) who brought his Bose headset along.

The intercom worked ok but the radio was useless from spurious noises. Didn't find out till airborne so had to complete the flight without radio.

Headsets which work fine have been the Zulu, the Telex 50 and Light Speed 15.

We have two Telex Stratus 50 headsets in our CT which seem to work fine although a little bulkier than the Bose.

Save yourself some money - and the headaches by buying an ANR Lightspeed QFR XCC headset. I've been very pleased with my two sets.

You can get these sets from airplanegear.com for $289.00, much cheaper than anywhere else I've seen. Speak with Rob Rollison. He's a good guy - and very knowledgeable about headsets and Light Sport.

Maybe you have to pay a lot more money to experience the headaches that you are talking about.

    Default Bose Headsets

I've used Bose headsets for all of the 70 hours I've put on my CTLS since July with no problems. I also used them for nearly 400 hours in a Rotax engined Zenair 601XL prior to the CT without issues.
