Default Things to do out of McCall

Maybe this should be under the "post your flights" topic, but here goes. I took another pilot friend out last week to see what the country SE of McCall looked like this time of year and for places for us to visit during the 09 fly-in. About 35 miles SE of McCall there is a private ranch with a lodge called Sulfur Creek. This could be a place to fly to for breakfast. We approached it but didn't land because it is private and didn't look like anyone was there this time of year. I did land at a strip about 10 miles away call Bruce Meadows that is a Forest Service strip. It is about 6500 feet elevation and was muddy in places. Didn't see the mud until on the ground. That made for an interesting landing since we were at close to gross and with the mud spots it really slowed us down. The landing was a touch and go but we didn't have much go. Got back in the air okay and then took the picture of the ranch. Will post it on another message. Will try to do more of these as we get closer to the fly-in. Some great ideas were contributed at a luncheon of the local owners of CT's for "fly to places". One is to fly to Nampa (45 minutes S of McCall) and go thru the "War museum" here. They have quite a few WW2 planes and lots of detail memorabilia. Another is to fly to Cottonwood, about 45 minutes N and go to the local church museum there. That route could be over the Hells Canyon area and the Seven Devil Mtns.

Dave Hill has a pontoon boat and has volunteered it for us to use for a cruise on the lake one evening. I can barrow or find a couple more and we will definitely do the lake cruise one afternoon ending at the north beach. Anyone else have any ideas or wishes, please send. Enclose picture is of the lake from the north taken several months ago. Spud

    Default Sulfur Creek Ranch

Enclosed photo of Ranch this November. Looks like nice straight in approaches from both directions and go arounds if necessary. Will try it out next summer before 09. Spud.

    Default McCall flyin

The enclosed pictures are of the area just north of Sun Valley about 30 miles and this is one of the sites I would suggest we make on our flyin to McCall next summer. I had a friend from Texas staying with me so flew him from Boise to Smiley Creek and made him buy breakfast. On the way back we climbed north toward Stanley and then over the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the mountains in the pictures. I had no idea they were back there as they are hidden from view by the Sawtooths front range. As we left Boise area there was another CT about 5 minutes behind us and Dave Hill joined us for breakfast too. Just a coincidence he picked the same time. The web site for their webcam at Smiley Creek airport is http://apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/RWIDS_Pu ... s/_122.htm
