Default Final, (I think) agenda for the McCall Fly In

Final, (I think) agenda, but subject to change.

    2009 Flight Design
    Fly-in
    McCall, Idaho
    July 9, 10, 11, 12.

McCall (Kmyl) is 90 miles north of Boise with a single runway, Runway 16/34, which is 6,107 feet long and 75 feet wide. The runway is equipped with MIRL and REILs. The airport has an NDB non-precision approach and a stand alone GPS with lower visibility minimums. Aiding the approach to Runway 34 are VASIs, and a PAPI on Runway 16. Lighting is pilot-controlled. The airport handles an estimated 40,000 operations annually. Elevation is 5021 feet. Land to the north and take off to the south if wind and traffic allows.

The town is immediately to the north on Payette Lake with full services. There are motels across highway 55 from the ramp, one being a Super 8, phone number is 208-634-4637. Fly in rate is $89. The Hunt Lodge is 2 blocks north of the corner of the airport, phone 208-634-4700. Fly in rate is $116.10 for Thursday night and $126.10 for Friday and Saturday nights. (these rates are good until the 9th of June). Hunt Lodge is plus tax. Across the street from the Hunt Lodge is the Pancake House, known for it’s breakfasts and lunches. There is a Mexican restaurant across the street to the north and the Mill, a great place for prime rib is about 4 blocks north of the airport. There are several more restaurants also within walking distance to the north on the main hiway. A grocery store and drug store are diagonal across the street to the NE. All services are close. McCall has a 27-hole golf course on the other side of town requiring transportation to it. There is a free city bus system.

There is a full service FBO, McCall Aviation on the field with fuel and mechanics and rental cars. There are lots of backcountry strips if you are comfortable flying into them. We plan on flying over to Smiley Creek for breakfast one morning and to be able to see the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains. McCall Aviation has 7 rental cars including two suburbans available at 208-634-7137 ext 2. More cars are available at Collins Auto body. (See link, inidaho.)

There is alcohol free 91 octane mogas at two stations in town, one being only a couple hundred yards from the airport corner. I have a tester for alcohol content. We can haul gas as needed to the planes or buy the avgas from the FBO. (I have many gas cans for your use.)

    THE SCHEDULE

This is a guide only and can and will be varied as the pilots wish.

Thursday, July 9th, arrival and check in at your motel.

Meet at the Hunt Lodge at 4:30 pm in the breakfast room for an informational talk about spin control and emergency maneuvers by Rich Stowell. Rich has extensive experience with these maneuvers and has planes locally that are approved for lessons if anyone wishes to pursue this option.

At 5:30 pm, Lori MacNichol, owner and pilot extraordinaire, will then give us a 50 minutes FAA credited talk about mountain flying with slides she has taken of the beautiful area around McCall. This will give you an idea of what we can see ourselves from the air in the next few days. Guaranteed to be worth your while.

Meet across the street at the Pancake House for dinner at 6:30 pm with pilot briefing for the flying on Friday.

Friday July 10th. Breakfast on your own. Option is available to fly to Sulphur Cr. lodge (ID74) for breakfast on the way to Nampa, departure at 7am, (flying into Sulphur Cr. requires some mountain flying experience.) Or meet at the McCall, airport at 9:00 am and fly to Nampa (S67) direct in groups of 5. Will have local pilots as guides. Meet at the Warhawk Museum on the north side of the field. P51’s will be there for demonstrations and rides if interested. Tour the museum and it’s collection of warplanes and then lunch at the Blue Sky café.
Fly to Ontario, KONO, arriving about 2pm to tour the private collection of Jet Fighters. Return to McCall via Hell’s Canyon. Or fly around McCall locally instead of going to the valley.
Gather at the boat dock at the Marina at 6 pm for a pontoon boat and private boat ride around the beautiful Payette Lake viewing the homes and scenery.
Will then have dinner at the North Beach State Park with a barbeque and beverages. Price to be determined. Bring your swimsuit, the water is crystal clear and cool. Award the door prizes. Be back to the dock by 9:30.

Saturday July 11th. Fly out to breakfast locations at 7 am. Choices to be determined, but Smiley Cr. is the first option, Johnson Creek is second then the Minam Lodge. Return to McCall or for the second flight of the day, fly with guide Tom Dixon to Cottonwood, ID (S64) to visit the Monastery museum leaving about 10:30 am from McCall or direct from Smiley Cr. The Chapel is closed that day for a special event. Afternoon will be open for your leisure or flying. Meet for dinner at the Mill, with great steaks down the street from the Hunt Lodge at 7 pm. Groups of 4 to 6 per table.

Sunday July 12th. Breakfast on your own and then fly home, or better yet, stay and enjoy the area as long you can. Golfing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, boating, jet skis, the list goes on.

    Default Added item of interest

There will be a B-17 at the McCall airport until the afternoon of the 9th with rides available. This is one of only 10 that are now flying of over 12,000 that were built during the war.

Something we need to decide about when you all get here is "what do you like for dinner on the boat cruise?" We will take along some barbeques and can cook about anything on the boats when we beach at North Beach. Hamburgers and Brats or we can get fancy with steaks and fish??? Suggestions?

We got approval to visit the private Jet Fighter collection at Ontario, Or. too.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Thank you for all the effort you have put into this event.
Unfortunately we have to cancel our participation in this great event. We were looking forward to seeing many of the CT's that we haven't seen in over a year.
Our wishes to one and all for an enjoyable visit and time. May you all have a safe and uneventful flight.
    With regrets,
