Default Tentative schedule for the McCall flyin next year.

Us locals in the Boise area have some suggestions for an agenda for the flyin in next year to McCall. Trying not to make it too formal, let's try the following and see what you all think about it.

Thursday, July 9th. Arrive, get settled into your motel near the airport. Dinner together with dinner speaker Lori MacNichol, president of McCall Mtn. Canyon Flying School. One hr. informal talk with hints on how to fly the back country and her favorite routes around the back country, (no landings necessary, just beautiful country). AND, of course, talk about the CTSW. Lori is begging for a ride in one of our planes.

Friday, July 10th. Fly to Nampa, (45 minutes south), visit the Warhawk museum, (http://www.warhawkairmuseum.org/) then lunch at the airport cafe, then fly West to Ontario, Oregon (30 minutes) visit the private collection of jet fighters and then back to McCall along the Snake River thru the south end of Hell's Canyon (One hr). Maybe skip lunch and get back earlier and eat at McCall to get home before the air gets bumpy. Then for the evening, we will find some pontoon boats, buy some box lunches, and beverages and tour the beautiful Payette Lake with some pretty fancy homes along it. Price per front foot of the lake is around $25,000 now if you are interested in buying. Ending up at north beach park for a swim or jet ski rides or, of course, talk about our planes. Gets dark about 10:30 pm, so have to be back to the docks by then.

Saturday, July 11th, fly to Cottonwood, Id, about 45 minutes north, visit the Abbey and museum, have lunch there and return along the Seven Devil Mountains on the rim of Hell's Canyon from the north end. See options below for the afternoon. http://abbey.solutiosoftware.com/monast ... tion-abbey

Sunday, July 12th. local breakfast at the Pancake House, or fly to Smiley Cr. (50 minutes east) for breakfast and then head home.

Other things to do if these options don't appeal to you are, float trips on the Payette River, golf, more golfing, fishing on the local lakes, rivers and streams, there are over 200 lakes within a 20 mile radius of McCall. Some will require some hiking. Mountain biking at the local ski hills, site seeing (rental cars), jet skis, or just enjoying the time off in a resort community.

I have arranged with the local fuel company to get a 300 gallon tank and pump setup that I will put in the back of my pickup with 91 octane mogas for our use. We will have to work out how to dispense it.

Depending on the interest in the options we will need some transportation arranged for. There is a local bus service in town and it is free. Rental cars are available from the McCall Aviation. I know it is too early to ask for commitments but what sounds interesting?? Any comments would be appreciated, as I have not attended one of these meetings. Planning on going to Page, if the weather coops.

    Thanks,
    the Boise area group. Idaspud

    Default jos's grand tour

Wow, sounds like a great trip you made. If you made a trip log and took pictures, please post them, we all like to see what the country looks like from the air. Charlie Tango posts some great pictures of the high mountains in western Nevada, (Central California?) I have two CD's of back country flying in Idaho and the strips vary from quite easy like "Smiley Creek" to "Mile High" that is actually about 7500 feet and is on the side of a mountain and you land up hill with lots of power and just to roll to a stop on the top. I will have these available to view next year at the gathering in addition to what else we do. Spud.

Default Went flying today for the first time in 6 weeks.

Talk about withdrawal, I had gone over 6 weeks since even flying around the pattern here in the Boise Valley. While at the airport today I stopped by the Warhawk Museum to see if I could get a special rate and found out that they have a special event going on that weekend. Below is the original schedule proposed earlier,

"Friday, July 10th. Gets dark about 10:30 pm, so have to be back to the docks by then."

Today, the 5th of Feb., I found out that we cannot get a special rate because they are having a very special event that weekend too. The link to their special event is " http://www.warhawkairmuseum.org/calendar.htm

A Salute to North American Aviation
    July 11 - 12

This will be something of very special interest for us to see when we visit Nampa, a whole bunch of WW2 fighters, and you can buy a ride on one if you want too. Entrance fee is $8.00, but the ride will be a LOT more, I know, I rode in a P51 several years ago. (grin)

    Default Warhawk museum

    The posting on the Warhawk Museum web site is;

A Salute to North American Aviation
    July 11 - 12
This event is possibly the most thorough representation of North American Aviation's technological achievements at any one event in the world in 2009. The Warhawk Air Museum will have a very complete gathering of North American's design achievements that undisputedly helped lead to Air Superiority in Europe during WWII which of course lead to ultimate Victory of the War. We will have the advanced NAA trainers AT-6 and SNJ on hand, the Allison powered P-51A, the first merlin powered variant P-51C, the refined bubble canopy P-51D , and finally the duel controlled TF-51D. These four separate model of P-51 mustangs represent the most complete lineage of the design progression of the North American P-51 mustang that you will find anywhere in 2009. We will also host the North American T-28 Trojan which trained and transitioned pilots into America's first fully functional front line Jet fighter..the North American F-86 Saber Jet. (static display only) We are very privileged to announce that Ed Maloney will once again be our guest speaker for this event and share his vast knowledge of the design evolution of North American Aviation's great achievements during the piston age and into the jet age. All aircraft will fly and limited Sponsorship rides are available to the public. For more information call: 465-6446.

Dear IdaSpud: I happened to see your post concerning a July 2009 flyin at McCall. Is there an update? My wife Nancy and I are planning trip to the west this summer, I have a sister living in Coeur de Alene, friends in Boise, and a bent for sightseeing. We got our CTLS in Aug 2008 and have already flown from home, Pensacola, Fl, to San Diego and back for Thanksgiving with family; so CT XC flying is We would appreciate an update if possible.

    Default Update

Hi Ken, yes, we are still planning on getting together here in central Idaho starting the 9th of July. The schedule looks something like this, fly in on Thursday, meet for dinner that night, (Pancake House) stay at the Hunt lodge across the street, (see other posting). Then Friday fly to Nampa (90 miles), near Boise for a visit to the Warhawk museum, where they are having a special event with a lot of P51's. (Join the museum and for a fee get a ride in one of the fighters) Lunch there at the cafe, then fly to Ontario, OR, (30 miles) to visit a private collection of jet fighters, then back to McCall. That night, Friday, I will get together some pontoon boats and we will cruise the lake here and end up at an isolated type beach at the north end and have a box dinner. Swim or just gab about our planes. The lake is crystal clear and cool and we have some very beautiful home located here. Saturday, fly to Smiley Cr. ( about 100 miles) over near Sun Valley for breakfast, (very good food) with great views to fly over (Sawtooth National Recreation Area) and then have dinner that evening at a local steak house, (the Mill). Or fly up north to visit a local church museum.

We have a gas station only 1/8th of mile from the corner of the airport that has non ethanol gas too. We are a resort community.....so there are lot's of thing to do, golf (5 courses), jet skiing in the lake or boating, riding up the ski hill's, (2) and riding mountain bikes down, fishing, hiking into local lakes, (200+- in a 25 mile radius of McCall) and of course flying around the area to see the sites, and if you feel qualified fly into some of the back country strips for meals. We have a Mtn Flying school here and I have a verbal commitment from the owner to give us a brief review at dinner one night. Then fly out on the 12th, if you can't stay longer.

We are at 5,000 feet elevation but our runway is 6,000 feet long. Lots of parking. Free city bus around town.

Please join us and meet the other owners of this great airplane. I went to Page last fall and it was just fantastic flying with the group. Hopefully there will be some of the experts here to talk with about our planes too, (Roger????)
