Default Grand Canyon SFR Area; Routes from the LA Basin

Folks - I'm putting this in the 2008 fly-in section since it's probably the most relevant.

I'm thinking about a trip this fall, roughly BZN-BOI-PDX, maybe a trip up to Friday Harbor, then south along the coast (if the weather's good) or inland (if not), down to the LA basin to see friends, over to Paige and Monument Valley, SAF and then over in to DAL.

As I read the Grand Canyon special flight rules area, the minimum altitude for the coridors are 10.5k. This precludes a sport pilot from flying over the canyon. Do I have this right?

If I can't fly over the canyon and am going to Paige from SoCal, then I'd need to swing up NE first and then over to PGA, something like SNA - L35 (Big Bear) - 61B (Boulder City) - PGA.

    Any thoughts?

    TNX,

    Default Altitude

You are right about the Sport pilot 10K altitude restriction, but who would know if you added 500'? It is not the plane that is restricted, but the pilot. No one up there to pull you over and check your ID. For the scenery that is offered flying over the Grand Canyon well I would certainly go for it personally, but that is up to each pilot to decide.
10.5K going from north to south and 11.5K going from south to north. We will be back again in October and I'm sure have a huge flock of CT's migrating over the area.

Yeah, I know, nobody knows per se, but, well the transponder will be replying, and you never know .... And hopefully, I will have my medical worked out by then (4+ months in remission so far!).

As for October, will this be later in the month? I am thinking of going about the end of September - still good weather in the NW, not brutally hot in the SW, but it will still be bumpy / windy in the afternoons.
